Fun facts to see in Como - la statua dell’Amicizia Fraterna

Are you looking for fun facts to see in Como?

In past centuries Como was known as the City of Silk. Back in the 1800s, Como's production attracted buyers from all over Europe, especially from England.
At the same time many miles away from Como, in Japan, is the town of Tokamachi, located in the Niigata district, a hundred miles northwest of Tokyo.
This pretty town is famous in Japan for its abundant snowfall, so much that in February the Snow Festival is celebrated: the town becomes a natural theater where snow, lights and sounds blend together, creating wonderful performances.
However, Tokamachi is not only known for this show. Another event makes it famous throughout all Japan and that is the Kimono Festival, which is celebrated on May 3rd. Thousands of citizens line the streets of this city wearing the traditional Japanese silk clothes, and it is precisely in Tokamachi that high-quality kimonos have found the finest seat of production.

"In the city of snow and kimono, while dreaming of an ever better future, as we raise our thanks, we insistently ask with confidence that today as well we can all continue to work."
With this traditional mantra, the city's residents celebrate this day.

Thus, Como and Tokamachi found themselves to be soulmates in their love of silk. However, the most extraordinary thing is to discover that this twinning was made possible by a letter written by a little girl from Como to the mayor of Tokamachi.
The mutual friendship covenant was signed on February 27, 1975 by then Italian mayors Antonio Spallino and the Japanese Yoshimi Kasuga.
In memory and honor of this event a statue of Fraternal Friendship was made, a real fun fact to see in Como.
